Oh my gosh - SOOOOOO many memories!! I grew up on a farm on Eyre Peninsula, South Australia and my parents would always take us to this quirky little chinese restaurant on Glen Osmond Road whenever we came to Adelaide (an 8 hour drive) - It was the Voung Tao and we thought it was fantastic.
1. Dad always had sweet & sour pork
2. Mum always had beef with black bean sauce
3. My sister always had fried icecream (& lemon chicken)
4. I can't remember what I chose - I think vegetables in oyster sauce (probs still a firm fave if I am honest)
5. There was this dinky little fridge up by the counter where you could go and choose a soft drink. Of course, dad paid for these but in my mind, this was like the best thing ever!!
6. My sister and I ALWAYS had to go to the bathroom. This meant we had to walk out through the kitchen to the back of the shop. The action in that kitchen was incredible.
7. The lady who took our orders front of house was positively ancient. She was probably 50 but we thought she was old. AND she knew our names!! We weren't there every week so this still blows my mind today.
Thankyou for reminding me of some beautiful times of a 70's childhood all wrapped up in a fortune cookie memory. 😊
2. sweet sour pork, beef black bean, lemon chicken & fried ice cream are the top contenders on the written menu!!
3. also satay beef, mongolian lamb (speaking of. did this originate from the mongols?) special fried rice (BBQ pork put the special in it)
4. an 8 hour drive for chinese food *tear drop down face* my folks had customers who would buy takeaway to freeze and take up north of WA with them :)
5. i grew up in the crazy action of the kitchen. i was introverted & refused to serve customers so i learned to prep & cook. you would have walked past a disgruntled teen like me :)
